Famed columnist Dan Savage of “Savage Love” once challenged his readers to come up with a neologism for the sex act in which a woman uses a strap-on to penetrate her male partner. Terms such as “bob” and “punt” were runners up, but in the end, “peg” was declared the winning verb despite the fact that Peg is the name of Savage’s aunt. Thus, the thought of “pegging” might have traumatic consequences for Savage, but you shouldn’t give it a second thought. Strap-ons – a dildo in a harness – are a favorite sex toy among heterosexual couples primarily because they allow a woman to be the “pegger” rather than the “peggee” for a change. The role reversal can be powerful and exciting for both partners.

But men also can enjoy the pleasures of “strapping on” whether they are having trouble getting or maintaining an erection, want to wow their partners with extra size, or just want to try something new. There are strap-ons designed to fit men. And, for the truly adventurous, there’s the Menage a Trois Strap-On which enables a man to penetrate a woman vaginally and anally at the same time.

Choosing the right “equipment” goes a long way in assuring success. A harness may be a series of straps, an adjustable-waist panty or a crotchless combination of the two that allows a woman to get a little while she gives a little.

Patented systems such as the Powerlock Harness or Jenna’s Harness take much of the guesswork out of what comes next by including accessories designed to lock into place, fit close to the body and give no delay in thrusting. These include dildos, vibrating dildos and double dildos. The latter is a two-headed phallus that fits through the harness penetrating the woman with one end and her partner with the other.

If you prefer to choose or replace a toy, consider a realistic dildo made of acrylic, jelly rubber or Cyberskin. Or, trot out your tried-and-true toys. Many dildos with flared bases and suction cups fit into harnesses.

Always aim to get a tight fit between the harness and the dildo as well as the strap-on and the wearer to help avoid slip-outs. And try not to get frustrated if mishaps do happen. It can take some time to get the hang of using a strap-on. A sense of fun (and a tube of lube) can go a long way.
