Image With thousands of vibrators on the market, the astonishing array of styles, sizes, materials and shapes can be both exciting and a little daunting. Here’s a guide to give you the lay of the vibrator land.

Styles
Whether you’re looking for a simple back massage, some clitoral stimulation, a bit of anal action or something to tickle your G-Spot, there’s a special model of vibrators specifically engineered to suit your needs. So honing in on your erogenous zone of choice is your first decision point.

While there are some vibrators designed to stimulate multiple erogenous zones, many women prefer to have multiple vibrators with each vibrator specializing in one area.

One more tip for beginners: Pick a toy with variable speeds so you can play around until you discover just what amount of vibration you like.

Size
Size matters. A lot. All the bells and whistles won’t matter if the vibrator you choose is too big or too small. Beginners should start with an average-sized vibrator. If in doubt, go small rather than big so you know your new toy will fit. But if you’re a bit more experienced, it may be time to try something new. Likewise, if you feel the need for deeper penetration or additional features, there are hundreds of vibrators on the market. Go crazy!

Materials
Vibrators now come in a variety of forgiving materials that go easy on your soft parts. Plastic, the first modern material chosen for vibrators is still a viable option. Hard and inflexible, it doesn’t absorb movement, so vibrations are intense. It’s smooth and non-porous, which makes sanitizing easy.

Jelly and firmer rubber toys are soft to the touch, flexible and often waterproof. The materials are porous, so it’s best not to share. Toys should be rinsed with warm water.

Silicone toys are smooth and soft. They warm to the touch and maintain body temperature, which makes for a more realistic experience. Durable and non-porous, these toys can be washed with soap or sterilized with boiling water.

Touch a sample of Nu-Skin for the first time and you might jerk back your hand as if you’ve caressed a stranger’s private parts by accident. It feels that real. The nature of the skin-like material also allows for visual details such as veining. The material is porous and attracts lint, but for many, the product is worth a little TLC.

Shape
If you want a vibrator, but you don’t want a toy penis lying around the house, the traditional smooth, cylindrical vibrator is a good choice. Dependable, inexpensive and relatively thin, they’re also great for beginners. With a tapered end and rounded tip, these sex toys are good for clitoral stimulation as well as vaginal penetration.

Clitoral vibrators are arguably the best vibrators on the market because they provide such intense clitoral stimulation that they’re effective on even women who otherwise have difficulty having an orgasm. There are two major kinds of clitoral vibrators—rabbits or dolphins and beavers. The names come from how these vibrators stimulate the clitoris.

Rabbit vibes feature two small prongs—the rabbit’s ears—that directly tickle the clit. Rabbit vibrators are the most popular model on the market, thanks to a plug on HBO’s Sex and the City. All the hype pales in comparison to the actual performance of these vibrators, and many women own more than one. The toy is named for the tiny rabbit that rides the cylinder. His ears vibrate at high speeds over the clitoris like a feather or tongue while the phallus vibrates, rotates and/or thrusts.

Beaver or dolphin vibrators rely on one larger nub, either the beaver’s tail or the dolphin’s nose, for clitoral stimulation. Many women prefer the rabbit vibrator claiming that it has a lighter, more teasing and feather-like feel to it than the beaver or dolphin. The single, larger nub of the beaver and dolphin vibrators allows for more intense and heavy-handed stimulation.

You can spot a G-Spot vibrator at 50 paces. This sex toy has a bulbous head with a bit of a crook in its neck. When inserted into the vagina, heads up, the curve directs the tip to your G-Spot. Longer and wider than traditional models, these vibrators often have stimulating ripples along the shaft.

Realistic vibrators are modeled after actual penises, from the head to the balls, often molded from the bodies of porn studs. Sometimes made from Cyberskin, a material that simulates the texture and heat retention of real skin, they come in every size, shape and color. Adam & Eve also offers a cool Clone a Willy kit that allows you to mold a realistic vibrator from a partner’s penis.

As their name implies, anal vibrators are designed specifically for anal penetration. Anal vibrators are shorter and thinner than regular vibrators and feature a flared or extended base for easy removal. Anal vibrators generally measure four to six inches long with a width that can vary from 0.75 to 1.25 inches.

Bullet and egg vibrators are both common additions to several different models of sex toys because of their ability to provide extra stimulation and enhance the user’s experience. Bullet vibrators are often used in different models of cock rings, while egg vibrators can be found in masturbation sleeves and love dolls.

When, Where and How
You’ve got to love all the waterproof vibrators on the market. Many moms say the bathroom is the only escape they get, and they take full advantage, combining a waterproof vibrator with a warm, sensuous bubble bath or powerful shower massage. Tops among play pals is the I Rub My Duckie, a vibrator that can sit undetected amongst all the other bath toys until it’s time for action.

If you’re not sure when or where you might have a moment to spare, just be prepared. The Remote-Control Vibrating Tiger Panty or a wireless clit stimulator such as the Micro Orchid gives you plenty of options.

Do you want to really be naughty? Strap on a Butterfly Vibrator before work, keep it humming until you find an opportune moment, then dial up a little hands-free pleasure.

Travel-size toiletries are a must these days for a business trip, and so are discreet, packable mini vibrators. The Fukuoku 9000 offers a powerful punch in a pocket-sized vibrator with three stimulating tips in a small wallet. You also might get past security with a Duets Vibrator, a sleek four-inch vibrator that dispenses its own lube and looks like a large lipstick.
