Penis pumps were originally marketed solely to help men with erectile dysfunction. But now, with the emergence of drugs such as Viagra and Levitra, penis pumps have been more broadly popularized to help any man get a larger, harder erection.

Contrary to some claims, penis pumps won't permanently enlarge your penis. Sorry guys, the changes are just temporary. Nonetheless, many men enjoy the intense suction action, enough so that penis pumps are gaining new popularity as a masturbator.

Penis pumps work the opposite way of most other pumps you’ve ever encountered. Instead of inflating bike tires or basketballs, penis pumps work by removing air. As the air is suctioned out and a vacuum is created, the penis gets pulled into the cylinder and extra blood rushes into the erectile tissue creating greater-than-average engorgement.

When buying a penis pump, look for a model that would create a tight seal between the chamber and your skin. Many users also prefer a trigger-type device to the bulb as they argue that the trigger is easier to use. For safety reasons, you should buy only pumps that contain an emergency release valve. This valve will fill the chamber with air in case you have difficult removing the pump.

So here’s how to work it. First, apply a generous amount of water-based lube to your penis as well as all around and in the rubber or latex sealing ring of the pump tube. Then push your penis through the ring and into the tube until the mouth of the tube is firmly up against your body. For the pump to be effective, the penis must fit all the way inside so that the base of the pump forms a solid seal against the skin. Begin pumping just a little bit at a time. At first, keep it slow — very slow. Over-pumping can rupture veins and bruise the penis shaft. Get too zealous and you can also accidentally suck your testicles into the pump. Trust me — you do NOT want this to happen.

Continue pumping until you are firmly erect. Now stop for a moment and examine yourself: Does the pressure feel comfortable? Is there any unusual discoloration or veins that look on the verge of exploding? If you have no discomfort or visible signs of a problem, pump a little more and hold. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, open the air valve and release the pressure. You can always pump back up again.

You should never use a penis pump for prolonged periods of time. Twenty minutes or less is the usual rule of thumb.

Some men like to pump all the way to orgasm. Others use pumps as a pre-curser to a hot sex session. If so, when you are done with the pump, you may want to put on a cock ring to help you preserve that extra length and girth. Now you are ready to wow your partner during a different kind of pumping session.
