Porn star Ava Rose, 21, talks about her first year as a contract star for Adam & Eve, why Buddism speaks to her, and her dream of someday owning a coffee shop.

Q.  How did you get into the adult entertainment industry?
A. I was working at a sporting goods store in Carson City, Nevada and dancing at the Wild Orchid strip club. A man approached me in the club and asked if I would do a photo shoot. My sister and I went. They asked us to masturbate on camera. I thought it was gross. I don’t masturbate in front of a camera with my legs open. But it led to a screen test, a boy-girl scene, two weeks later. The first short film came next. I got $350, but it was easy so I was OK with it. My sister and I moved to California, acquired our stage names and worked our way up from Gonzo films, where you just show up on set, have sex and go, to feature films. I met a director who introduced me to people at Adam & Eve. I did catalogue pictures first, then signed to do films. Lady Scarface was my first movie followed by It’s All About Ava. I did one film with my sister Mia, Double Trouble.

Being a contract star is great. I make $6,000 a film, or a month. I can’t shoot porno for anyone else during that time. I can do soft core movies (simulated sex for Cinemax or HBO) and photo shoots. Mia continues to work in the industry, but hasn’t signed with anyone.

Q. What you do for a living is hard to imagine for most people because having sex is usually a very personal, private thing. How do you separate the sex you have at work and the sex you have at home?
A. Sex at work is definitely different. It’s opening up for the camera and getting into creepy positions. At home, I like to just lie there and enjoy it. I like to be inventive and crazy sometimes, but mostly I like to be lazy in bed.

Q How can you feign intimacy with an actor you’ve only just met?
A. We all know it’s our job, so for the most part it’s really easy. It’s kind of like screwing a new guy in your personal life. It’s exciting.

Q What’s a typical day like?
A. When I’m shooting, I get a script about a week in advance. I read over it then, but I really get my lines down by going over it several times just before the scene is shot. I show up on set to get into hair and makeup as early as 8 a.m., then work until around 10 p.m. There is a lot of waiting. Dialogue takes time. Getting all the shots takes time. Moving from one set to the next takes. There is a lot of down time. I spend most of the day in my pajamas, getting my make up touched up. It takes two to three days to shoot a feature film, and I do one a month, so I have a lot of time off.

Q What do you do in your spare time?
A. I’m a real homebody. I’ve been recognized on the street once. I’m in Starbucks several times a day. I have a Maltese named Charlie, so I go to the dog park. I watch movies, eat canned squid. (I’m not much of a cook, and it’s delicious.)

Q Appearances are very important in your line of work. Do you eat less than I do? Work out more? Go tanning?
A. I do go tanning, but I don’t wear makeup outside of work. I didn’t watch what I was eating until I got my contract, and I was too thin. I’ve gained 35 pounds. I’m 5’6” and I weigh 135. Fans seem to like me more now that I’ve put on a few more curves. I am starting to work with a personal trainer to firm up.

Q Who are you close to? Parents? Sister? Boyfriend?
A. I’m very close to my sister, my parents and my boyfriend Devan. But this is the first time I’ve lived alone, and I’m enjoying it.

Q What do they think about your career?
A.

Devan (Sapphire) is a film director for Club Jenna, Jenna Jameson’s company. He hired me to do my very first feature, Taboo 22, a month before I got my contract with Adam & Eve. We have an open relationship. If we end up sleeping with other people we use condoms and we tell each other, but it rarely happens. Our relationship is not so much about sex; it’s more about being with someone you just like to be with.

My parents are happy for my sister and me. They’re not exactly proud of what we do, but they support us no matter what. It’s the thing I love best about my parents. Their only career advice was to try to find a way to be happy with your life, with your work.

Q What did you want to grow up to be when you were a little girl? Were you influenced by any particular religion?
A. I wanted to be a veterinarian, then I wanted to be a doctor. We lived in Alaska, then when I was 11 we moved to Nevada. I would say I’m spiritual, but not religious. My parents had religion pushed on them, so they didn’t do that to us. I was just raised to do the right thing. I believe Buddhism is a great religion. It’s about being nice, treating other people the way you want to be treated, and not pushing your religion on others.

Q I think we all have varying degrees of fear that others will judge us harshly – for whatever reason. When you first meet other people, is it awkward to them what you do for a living?
A. I lie. When I go to a club and people ask what I do, I tell them I’m a secretary. If I tell them what I really do, they have questions, questions and more questions. So, if I just want to have a short and sweet conversation, it’s best to say I’m a secretary. Then, by the time I tell them the truth, I know they’re going to be cool.

Q What are people’s expectations of you after they learn that you are a porn star?
A. Men are intimidated when they find out what I do for a living. They think I have sex with a lot of different men. I really don’t. I have only two scenes a month, and it’s with the same people, usually Tommy Gunn and Evan Stone. We get tested for STDs every three weeks, and I’ve never had one. Civilians don’t get tested nearly as often.

Women think that women in this business have to be skanky and dirty and suck everybody off and be divas. You don’t have to be that way. Contract stars are attractive, willing to put themselves out there on camera, able to handle interviews and conversations. They’re sexual, not slutty.

Q Is there anything you won’t do on camera?
A. I don’t do DP, double penetration. That’s not very cool. I don’t do anything degrading like really, really rough sex. In my personal life that kind of sex is OK because it’s with someone I trust, someone I care about. At any rate, it’s not an issue at Adam & Eve because they don’t do those kinds of films. A lot of what we do is couples based. I like thinking I may have helped couples improve their sex lives, but I think what they get from watching my movies, they really already have. You have to be open and content with each other to watch porno together.

Q Do you ever think about getting married, having children?
A. I don’t know about getting married. I don’t think you need papers to say you’re in love with someone. It just isn’t necessary. I’d like to have kids and be with someone someday, just not now. It’s a different stage in life.

Q If you have a daughter and she wants to follow in your footsteps, what will you tell her?
A. Not everybody is strong enough to handle this business. You’ve got to be mentally tough. People write in online forums that you look fat or like you’re on crack. Some of the girls read those things and it really gets them down. I would hope my daughter wouldn’t want to be in the business. I feel bad for my parents. Only two daughters. Both in porno. Maybe I’ll have a boy.

Q At what age do you expect to be too old to continue in your career? What are your plans?
A. Being under contract means 12 movies a year. It gives me a little longevity. I’m in higher demand because people don’t see as much of me, but there are newer, younger girls every day. I don’t want to be forced to compromise my standards, to return to Gonzo films where I would have to do anal sex, DP, as many scenes as I can get. For the lifestyle that I eventually want to live, I think I should pack up my things when I’m 26, move on and open my coffee shop. Maybe in Bodega Bay. Definitely up on the north coast. There’s nothing better than curling up with a cup of coffee and a book on a rainy day. It’s good for the soul.

Q What’s coming up for you this year in terms of films, magazine spreads, vacations?
A. Scouting locations for my coffee shop. I’d like to work more with director Ethan Kane. I’d like to be a feature dancer on the club circuit, making $3,000 an appearance plus tips. I need to start putting some money away for that coffee shop.
